OBJECT NARRATIVES

DESCRIPTION

For women, beauty and stature are the bodily virtues to be prized, as Aristotle tells us in the 4th century BC. Female beauty in antiquity is reflected in the so called “Tanagra-type” figurines.

The name Tanagra was attached to figurines of this type because at the end of the 19th century AD many were found in graves at the site of that name in Boeotia.

This type of figurine belongs to the Hellenistic period. Their production begun in Attica and dates from the middle or the end of the 4th century BC down to the 1st century BC.
