CYCLADIC CAFE ART PROJECT

6 APRIL - 30 MAY 2022

Τhe boundaries between the various media are not distinguished in each work, even when the final result bears the distinctive characteristics of one of them. Body, femininity, gender, sexuality, and identity are always present in various ways. She perceives body-form-existence-political-poetry as one single and indivisible entity, in which, if you slightly push something this creates a disturbance to the rest.

Since 2007, she has been creating compositions using a flatbed scanner. Scans sometimes act as autonomous works, sometimes as quick notes of her thoughts-ideas and sometimes as integral parts in other works. She prints them in various media such as textiles, canvas, paper, plastic, aluminum. The scanner acts in various ways. As a canvas, a composition field, where compositions of objects, sculptures and materials take place on and other times as a small stage, where body parts together with the machine’s light, objects and movement create performances of minimal duration. Scanning captures the moment of creation in a very direct way. A scan lasts almost as a breath (inhale-exhale), as the light passes and “licks” the body and objects. The way light sweeps/caresses the surface of object-bodies highlights various tactile qualities and details of surfaces-skins (human and non-human). Familiar and uncanny, ordinary, and weird objects or/and parts of the body as well as small sculptures of hers are transformed and become transcendental and mysterious with different intentions and associations each time.

Nana Sachini, the days before Sirius return to the night sky, 2020

An amorphous piece of bronze – a remnant of a sculpture – and a carved turtle shell with various creatures on surround and interact with the artist’s face. The bronze comes out of the lips that try to bite/support it. A breath of metal, a metal breath. Drops of her breath were recorded on the scanner’s glass. The shell as a weird planet oversees the scene; as an eyeball it comes out/hovers through the vast black darkness of the scanner. Both objects and their materiality have something primitive; fire, organic matter, life but also carry properties of their opposites.
