Remembering Brice Marden (1938-2023)
EVENTS
SEPTEMBER 20 UNTIL NOVEMBER 13, 2023
As a tribute to an artist who was deeply inspired by Greece and we were honored to work closely for his last museum show during his lifetime, his work Marble Ticket (2015) will be presented from September 20 to November 16, 2023, at the Museum of Cycladic Art reception hall (N. Douka wing).
This work had been included in the exhibition titled “Brice Marden and Greek Antiquity”, realized in the summer 2022 at the Museum of Cycladic Art. Paintings, marble paintings, works on paper and notebooks were presented in dialogue with sixteen antiquities from the Museum’s collections selected by Marden himself and the exhibition curator, artist and close friend of Marden, Dimitrios Antonitsis.
The work is accompanied by Antonitsis’ text “Remembering Brice Marden (1938–2023)”, originally published in Frieze.com online edition a few days following Marden’s death.
Free admission
After a career spanning six decades, Marden will continue to fascinate viewers with the gestural simplicity of his paintings and drawings. His work draws from art’s long history, combining elements of Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism, as well as ancient calligraphy and poetry. Greece, and in particular the island of Hydra, where he used to spend his summers since 1971, were central in his life.
For more than fifty years he drew inspiration from the Greek landscape and antiquity creating paintings filled with the light and colors of his beloved island Hydra.
