Cycladic Late Night

THURSDAY, JUNE 27

19:00 TO 24:00

THE EVENT

Sissi Rada, Christina Vantzou, Pina Bounce, K.atou: four artists of Greek and international electro-acoustic music, will present live music performances and a DJ set in dialogue with the works of Cindy Sherman at the Stathatos Mansion.

“Cindy Sherman at Cycladic: Early works” is a major exhibition presented by the Museum of Cycladic Art bringing together more than 100 works of the world-acclaimed American artist Cindy Sherman. The artist’s first solo museum exhibition in Greece offers a comprehensive view into Sherman’s ground-breaking and influential early series exploring how women are imaged in popular culture, including Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980), Rear Screen Projections (1980), Centerfolds (1981) and Color Studies (1981-1982).

Working by herself in the studio, Sherman transforms into various imagined characters in different contexts taking on all the roles required for the creation of her works. The exhibition focuses on women, their identity, and representation, and examines through Sherman’s works, a vast range of female stereotypes, posing ever-present questions.

The Cycladic Late Night is sponsored by Qualco Foundation.

LIVE PERFORMANCES

Sissi Rada

Sissi Rada, also known as Sissi Makropoulou, is a multifaceted artist who has navigated the realms of both classical and electronic music with finesse.

Hailing from Greece, Sissi has carved a distinctive niche for herself with her unique blend of ethereal vocals, innovative soundscapes, and a fearless approach to genre-defying musical exploration. She has studied music at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (Bachelor in Music), at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold (Master in Music, Solo) and the Universität der Künste Berlin (Master in Music, Orchestra). With notable skill, she collaborated with orchestras, such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Deutsche Oper and musicAeterna contributing to the classical music landscape with both technical prowess and emotional depth.

Both as an electronic musician and classical harpist she has collaborated with Brian Eno, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Andi Toma of Mouse on Mars, Jay Glass Dubs, Lena Platonos, Daniel Barenboim, Teodor Currentzis, Yannik Nézét-Séguin, Andris Nelsons and Donald Runnicles.

Christina Vantzou feat John Also Bennett

Christina Vantzou is a Greek-American composer based between Brussels and Athens. In her solo and collaborative works, she deals with sustain, slow orchestral shifts, field recordings, archeology and mystical states. An intimate practice of documenting her wanderings creates a travelogue cum dream journal atmosphere. Vantzou has presented her work in spaces such as Villa Medici (Rome), Philharmonie de Paris, Barbican Center (London), BOZAR (Bruxelles), Kölner Philharmonie (Cologne), Villa Lontana (Rome), Cafe Oto (London), St. Ann’s (Brooklyn) among many more venues. She regularly collaborates with musicians including Félicia Atkinson, Irene Kurka, John Also Bennett and Dopplereffekt.

During the Cycladic Late Night, Vantzou will perform a site-specific work for voice, electronics, flute and field recordings. A fictive character will be evoked through spoken word as a fantasy poem in direct conversation with the work of Cindy Sherman. This piece will be both intimate and immersive and will feature a guest performance by John Also Bennett on flutes and synthesizers.

Pina Bounce

Pina Bounce is an Athens-based musician. She works for film, theatre, dance and performances.

She has collaborated with festivals and institutions, including ONASSIS STEGI, Goethe-Institut Athen, documenta14, NEON Organisation, Hellenic Festival, Ultima contemporary music festival, as an artist, workshop trainer/facilitator, concert curator, or radio producer.

K.atou

K.atou is a Greek DJ and selector, who has been one of the strongest female voices in the local scene for over two decades. After spending time in London and Berlin, she moved back to Athens in 2009 and established residencies at Six d.o.g.s., co-presented a series of parties under the name “No Expectations”, regular appearances at the queer mobile parties “Qreclaim” and as a resident DJ at PTX Athens with her second moniker “Janet Davis”. Meanwhile, her international DJ schedule blossomed, with performances across Europe, South and North America.

She has performed three times at the Glastonbury Festival while she has also performed in Zukunft (Zurich), De School (Amsterdam), Recyclart (Brussels), Bassiani takeover @ Block (Tel Aviv), and Marble Bar (Detroit) to name a few. She also currently holds two residencies on Fade Radio and Movement Radio. With her mind focused on carving this dedicated path through DJing, K.atou maintains her position at the forefront of the electronic music scene. The ingredients of her particular sound can be attributed to the classic realms of the 90s house and techno from Detroit, Chicago, and Frankfurt, with a penchant for the trippy, dubbed out, and sublime.
