Red-figure krater

OBJECT NARRATIVES

DESCRIPTION

This red-figure krater, dated to the decade 470 – 460 BC, depicts, in a masterly and emotionally revealing way, a mythological scene: the return of Hephaistos to Olympus accompanied by Dionysus.

On the front side Dionysus is depicted, with a kantharos in his hand, accompanying the drunken Hephaistos, who lived far from Olympus because of his long-lasting quarrel with his mother Hera.

The krater is the work of an Attic workshop and is attributed to the artist conventionally called the Leningrad Painter.
