THE FESTIVAL

The Museum of Cycladic Art proudly organizes the second Cycladic Kids Festival on September 21 and 22 at the Athens Conservatoire. The festival introduces for the first time activities for children at the archaeological site of Aristotle’s School [Lykeion]. This year, children and teenagers aged 2 to 18 years are invited to participate in the most creative weekend in the center of Athens with free admission!

On Saturday 21 September and Sunday 22 September, the Athens Conservatoire, as the festival’s main venue, will host theater, music, dance performances, cinema, puppet shows, book narrations and visual arts workshops

Moreover, the Athens Conservatoire will host an exhibition with the works and winners of this year’s 11th Kids’ Art Contest curated by the Museum of Cycladic Art with the title “Today’s Stories on Ancient Vases” with 12,000 entries!

The Festival is held in collaboration with the Culture, Sports and Youth Organization of the City of Athens (OPANDA), the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Athens, with the support of the Ministry of Culture. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) is Lead Donor, Eurolife FFH Strategic Partner and Coral Main Sponsor.

The AFOU group adapts the modern fairy tale by beloved creators Antonis Papatheodoulou and Iris Samartzí, transporting us into the world of children’s emotions and imagination. In collaboration with renowned visual artist Pavlos Nikolakopoulos, they create a unique theater and puppetry experience for young audiences. Within a special scenic world made of paper pop-up sets and constructions, manual projections, magical lighting, and original music by Manolis Manousakis, talented actors will lead us on a seafaring adventure full of surprises and play, featuring the funniest pirates, pirateologists, and pirate scholars. The workshop focuses on physical games that children and parents can play to include creativity, communication, caring and fun in their ever-changing physical relationship. Based on Fighting Monkey theory and practice, parents and children will have the opportunity to learn games that support the development of physicality, communication and motor awareness. The workshop is open to all, regardless of previous dance experience, and aims to create a safe shared space for both parents and children. Space: New Stage, Athens Conservatoire Age: 5 – 12

Kids become archaeologists, participate in a “real” excavation and discover the buried secrets of the past. In the artificial trench they will find copies of objects from the Collections of the Museum of Cycladic Art and then they will participate in an outdoor workshop to understand in a creative way the process of excavation, photography and recording of the finds. They will also have the opportunity to learn about the everyday life in Antiquity through the stories told by the artifacts. Space: Aristotle’s School [Lykeion] Age: 6 – 10 years old

In this artistic workshop, our inspiration will come from the daily life of children in antiquity and the stories they create and tell through play. Colorful fabrics, newspapers, sticks, and threads will be transformed into puppets ready to tell imaginative stories! Weaving was an important occupation for women in ancient Greece who made textiles useful in their daily lives. To this day, many artists have been fascinated by this demanding technique and have elevated it to one of the ‘fine arts’, detaching it from its functional purpose. In this free flow workshop, the participants -parents and children- are invited to create colorful and geometric woven patterns (on paper looms) with colorful ribbons. To reveal the culprit, they must gather clues, solve educational puzzles, and piece together the information they collect, sharpening their imagination and critical thinking. Ancient Greek hymns with lyre, drum, and vocals will be revived at the Aristotle’s School [Lykeion] by the Orpheus Lyre Players, the world’s first certified performers of the ancient Greek seven-stringed lyre. Led by Dr. Nikos Xanthoulis and an eight-member team of music researchers, the amphitheater of the archaeological site will host a unique musical event featuring ancient Greek music for both children and adults. The workshop focuses on physical games that children and parents can play to include creativity, communication, caring and fun in their ever-changing physical relationship. Based on Fighting Monkey theory and practice, parents and children will have the opportunity to learn games that support the development of physicality, communication and motor awareness. The workshop is open to all, regardless of previous dance experience, and aims to create a safe shared space for both parents and children. Weaving was an important occupation for women in ancient Greece who made textiles useful in their daily lives. To this day, many artists have been fascinated by this demanding technique and have elevated it to one of the ‘fine arts’, detaching it from its functional purpose. In this free flow workshop, the participants -parents and children- are invited to create colorful and geometric woven patterns (on paper looms) with colorful ribbons. People from the past will bring to life the places that defined their daily lives as they take the audience on a journey through time.
