Maria Varela
“Decoding the Loom – The Secrets of the Old Weavers”

JANUARY 2025

FOR CHILDREN AGES 4-7 YEARS OLD

PROGRAM

Drawing on the visual transmission of motifs that was once common practice, she sheds light on how women in the early 20th century documented weave patterns in binary code on grid-based blueprints. These encoded motifs became a silent language, a means of communication among women artisans.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn to decode and personalize these traditional patterns, combining them with colors to craft unique messages. Varela’s work underscores the beauty and complexity of weaving as both an art form and a medium for storytelling.

PS.: Children need to wear casual and comfy clothes and be ready to get messy, as we will definitely get messy!
