Inspiration
The technique of engraving and printing.

For this activity, we will be inspired by the engravings on this clay vessel, as well as the imprints made by contemporary artist Harry Bertoia, to create our own cards. Look at the colors that this imprint has.

Materials

  • Foam sheet
  • White papers
  • toilet paper roll
  • Pair of scissors
  • Pencil
  • color cardboard
  • Temperas
  • Roller or thick brush

Proccess

  1. Place the paper roll on top of the foam surface. Along with your helper, draw the outline of the circle with a pencil.
  2. Cut out the circles that you drew, using a pair of scissors.
  3. Draw various repeating lines or shapes within the circles.
  4. At this point, the helper may retrace the lines to make them even deeper, without piercing the foam surface.
  5. Place a piece of paper on the work surface to avoid making a mess. Place the colors you like on the paper plates.
  6. Spread the paint on each shape using the roller. Tip: If a roller is not available, you may use a paintbrush.
  7. Make sure that all the circles are covered with paint and that the layer is uniform. No parts should be covered with an excessive amount of paint.
  8. Take a piece of cardboard and fold it in half to form a greeting card.
  9. Place the circles on a clean surface with the color facing upwards.
  10. Along with your helper, place the card on top of the circles and press down.
  11. Lift the card and remove the circles to reveal the design!

Tip: We can continue the activity by making as many prints as we like, using one or more colors.
