Marble collared-jar
OBJECT NARRATIVES
DESCRIPTION
This vessel, a krateriskos, is a copy in marble of a clay vase. It is the most widespread type of marble vessel during the Early Cycladic I period (3200 – 2800 BC).
The popular name ‘kandila’ is due to its resemblance to ritual vessels (oil lamps) of modern Greek Orthodox churches in the Cyclades, in many of which such vases were used until recently.
