Female figurine (Spedos variety)

OBJECTS 360°

DESCRIPTION

The swollen abdomen seems to indicate a state of pregnancy, a feature observed on several female figurines and has led scholars to interpret them as fertility deities, but this is far from certain.

Various features regarded as female (such as the swollen belly, breasts, folds in the abdomen) are sometimes displayed on male figurines too, probably due to the lack of special care of the prehistoric craftsman in rendering the gender or other anatomical details.

However, the use of figurines might have been more complex than we assume, and the variety of their typology is related to their different functions.
