Cycladic Sculpture
OBJECT NARRATIVES
DESCRIPTION
This is a monumental-sized statue of the canonical type, a Spedos variety, which is dated in the Early Cycladic II period (ca. 2700 – 2400/2300 BC).
This type has been called “canonical” because it displays constant morphological canons and artistic conventions. The “Spedos variety”, named after an Early Cycladic cemetery on Naxos, is the most prolific category of “canonical” figurines. It has the widest distribution within the Cyclades as well as elsewhere, and the greatest longevity.
This sculpture is the second largest complete Cycladic work yet known with a height of 1,40 m., coming after the statue of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens (height 1,48 m.).
