Corinthian helmet
OBJECT NARRATIVES
DESCRIPTION
Warfare was part of the everyday life in Ancient Greece. From a young age, men started to practice warfare techniques in order to become fit for battle. It was a great honour for a man to fight for his homeland, demonstrating a spirit of self-sacrifice for the common good.
This is a Corinthian bronze helmet, the sort that evolved into the most characteristic and emblematic type in Greek antiquity. It appeared at the end of the 8th century and remained in use until the 4th century BC. Its appearance coincides with the establishment of the institution of the hoplite (foot-soldier) and the creation of the military phalanx, which radically transformed the tactics of warfare.
