Daytrip to Ancient Nemea

CYCLADIC FRIENDS

MAY 31, 2026

Nemea is a place of profound mythological, religious, and historical significance. It is associated with the first labour of Heracles, the slaying of the fearsome Nemean Lion, as well as with Dionysus and the tradition of viticulture, which to this day makes the region one of Greece’s most important wine-producing areas.

In antiquity, Nemea was the site of the Nemean Games, the Panhellenic athletic competitions held in honour of Zeus and Opheltes, which attracted athletes and spectators from across the Greek world. At the heart of the excursion was the archaeological site of Nemea, home to the imposing 4th-century BC Temple of Zeus, the ancient Stadium, one of the most significant surviving monuments of its kind, and the Archaeological Museum of Nemea, which featured finds ranging from the prehistoric period to late antiquity.

On the return journey, a brief stop was made at the Holy Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni in Chiliomodi, set in a pine-covered landscape a few kilometres outside the village. The final stop of the excursion was the Diolkos, one of the most important engineering works of antiquity.
