Cycladic Kids Festival 2026

EDUCATION

SEPTEMBER 26 & 27

THE FESTIVAL

“I Would Like a Museum to Be…”

This was the question posed at the 13th International Kids’ Art Contest organized by the Museum of Cycladic Art. Thousands of children and teenagers from around the world responded by drawing and recording their ideas, showing us how they imagine a museum that truly belongs to them.

The 4th Cycladic Kids Festival is here to bring their ideas to life! Each Festival activity takes its title from an artwork that was awarded or recognized by the Competition’s jury. Through their participation, children and teenagers have helped shape the Festival program.

On 26 and 27 September 2026, the Athens Municipality Arts Center at Eleftherias Park will be transformed into a museum without walls — open, vibrant and full of color. Admission is free for kids, teenagers, families and everyone who wants to join the celebration.

The 4th Cycladic Kids Festival has been designed with inclusion in mind and in collaboration with specialized accessibility partners, liminal, so that every visitor can find their own place, regardless of age, needs, or social background. The program is aimed at children from age 4, teenagers, families, and adults. The venue is accessible to people with mobility disabilities. Accessibility also extends to the program, with services for selected exhibits and activities, such as interpretation in Greek Sign Language (GSL), subtitles for Deaf and hard-of-hearing people, audio description, materials in Braille and tactile maps for people with visual disabilities, as well as adaptations to the workshops and preparatory material for neurodivergent visitors. Because that’s what the children asked for: a museum for EVERYONE!

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

The Museum Opens Up a Dialogue!

A video animation brings the kids’ artworks to life, while through AR, a Cycladic figurine interacts with the audience. A free-expression wall invites children to share their thoughts by drawing and writing, and to contribute to an ever-changing exhibition! The Museum’s Museum Kits are on display and ready for you to explore them.

The Park Becomes a Big Stage

Theatre performances, music by teenage bands, storytelling, cinema & stand-up comedy!

Workshops for Everyone

Clay, screen printing, cooking, visual arts, weaving, building, acrobatics, skateboarding, dance, photography, creative reading sessions, an open library and immersive social awareness activities

A child wearing a light blue sweatshirt sits on a cushion on a wooden bench, holding one side of an open book. A young woman wearing a black camisole and jeans sits next to the child, holding the other side of the book, and they read it together. Both have curly dark hair and dark skin.

…a secret garden?

…a colorful space?

…a noisy hive?

…a pathway, a crossroads and a labyrinth…

How are images of museums captured in a book?
How are museum labels, words, captions and numbers represented in a book?
How are the stories of people in the world of art told through a book?

What might a reading journey look like among books written about art and museums? Could it include different stops highlighting the values of art, such as Acceptance, Respect, Inclusion, Identity, Equality, Culture, Uniqueness and Kindness?

Young and adult readers will leaf through stories and pause at that particular exhibit or label that captures their interest. They will then be invited to use a giant canvas to visually interpret, in their own unique way, the object or point that made the greatest impression on them.

By the end of the two-day event, a huge, “speaking wall” of a museum will have been created, featuring exhibits inspired by everyone who allowed themselves to be immersed in the pages of the books.
At the same time, on a second wall, readers will be invited to collaboratively create artworks within frames. The title of this parallel activity will be:

“Add Something Small or Something Big… a Line, a Shape”
In a smaller space, inspired by tactile books, participants will also create tactile constructions using cut-outs and recessed shapes.

People walk along a pedestrian path with a tactile guidance path. Four women are walking in the center of the photograph, with a person using a wheelchair moving in the same direction behind them.

Through experiential talks and interactive learning stations, children and adults alike will have the opportunity to explore, in a simple, human and meaningful way, different aspects of the everyday experiences of people with physical and sensory disabilities.

Guided by dialogue, participation and hands-on learning, visitors will discover practical approaches that foster an inclusive mindset while becoming familiar with fundamental principles of communication, interaction and everyday support.
Workshops:

• Accompanying Differently – Techniques for guiding a person with visual impairment
• The Guide Dog in Everyday Life
• Listening and Seeing Differently – Alternative ways of accessing information
• Moving Differently – Challenges, barriers and practical solutions for wheelchair mobility
• A Maze of the Senses – An experiential journey into different ways of perceiving the world through touch, hearing, smell and sight.
The workshops invite us to focus on the person first and discover that inclusion does not begin with major changes, but with the small, everyday actions that help everyone feel they belong.

In a park, several children and adults are creating a large spiral out of clay. Various natural materials, such as stones and plants, are placed on the surface of the spiral.

A large mass of natural clay is spread out on the floor, and—using many other sensory materials—a large spiral is built collaboratively—the symbol of perpetual motion and life. Do sculptures move? Do they tell stories? If they were to dance, what would their dance look like? “The Playing Sculpture” is a movement workshop that explores the relationship between bodies, space and the imagination. Using inclusive dance as our vehicle, we will create our own collective sculptures and play with the way we see – how we observe, what we know about what we observe, and how we let our imagination add its own elements to what we see.

The man on the right is wearing a khaki shirt with black and yellow stripes, a purple beanie, and burgundy trousers, while the man on the left is wearing a purple shirt with black and yellow stripes, a blue hat, and blue trousers.

An interactive dance-theatre performance for children, inspired by Mark Haddon’s novel “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”. The performance invites children and adults on a journey into the world of diversity, acceptance, understanding, respect and self-love.

Two parallel stories about things that are not as they seem, and things that do not seem as they truly are. Two children, ordinary like all children and unique like every child. Two children who see the world through their own distinctive lens and invite us to move alongside them, following two lines and experiencing what they feel, what they think and everything they wish to express but perhaps they cannot.

Because at the end of the day, who defines what is “normal”? Where does racism begin and what feeds it? How can we coexist? What is the potential of a group made up of individuals with different qualities, talents and skills? How can we transform what is perceived as a disadvantage into a… superpower? And where do these Parallel Yellow Lines lead?

Audio Description
On a theater stage, four people—two men and two women—stand one behind the other, pulling forcefully on a rope tied to a pillar. They are all wearing white long-sleeved shirts, brown trousers, and suspenders.

Come and play together — let’s all become one!

Adapted stories by the great teacher and writer Gianni Rodari invite children to see the world from a different perspective. More relevant than ever, Rodari’s tales explore issues such as addiction to television, the internet and tablets, as well as racism and equality, the power of dance and music, and the importance of teamwork in solving problems.

Using absurdist humour and playfully challenging stereotypes, Topi Theatre Group invites children and adults alike to break free from conventions and prejudices and look beyond them. A common thread running through Rodari’s stories is the timelessness of their themes, the restless spirit of their heroes, their moral reflection and their courageous spirit of protest.
For children aged 3 to 99… at most!
Based on stories by Gianni Rodari
Directed by Dimitris Pleionis

In Syntagma Square, in front of the fountain, four young women wearing red tops and black trousers perform an action wrapped around a metal light pole. They have anxious expressions, as if they are waiting for something.

“Everywhere” is an interactive dance experience that will transform the 4th Cycladic Kids Festival into an unexpected stage for movement, play and shared discovery. Get ready to shake, move, imitate, improvise, follow the dancers and before you even realise it, become part of a different kind of performance. An invitation to communicate through movement and music, to interact with the world around us, to disrupt the ordinary and create spontaneous moments of joy and connection everywhere.

Beside a swimming pool, a smooth grey stone with a thin orange embroidered design in the center and a spool wound with orange thread are placed on a rough stone surface.

A creative and calming workshop inspired by the colors and natural materials of the Cycladic landscape. Children discover the art of weaving natural stones, using colorful threads and simple techniques adapted to their age.

Through play and creative making, they engage with natural materials, develop their fine motor skills and express their imagination, creating their own unique work of art to take home as a keepsake. The experience offers a joyful opportunity to connect with nature, craftsmanship and creative expression, while encouraging relaxation, focus and enjoyment through the process of making something. An ideal choice for family events, children’s programs and cultural activities that bring together creativity, tradition and hands-on learning.

In an outdoor space, three girls and a boy sit around a wooden workbench. They are all wearing gloves; one of the girls is wearing clear protective goggles, while another is holding a thin tool. Together, they are creating a circular structure made of layers of soil and stones.

“Boulouki” – Itinerant Workshop on Traditional Building Techniques invites children aged 8–15 to a unique workshop dedicated to the traditional building practices of the Cyclades.
Through play and experimentation, children will discover the materials traditionally used on the islands: stone, clay-based mortars and other natural elements. Taking the Cycladic house as our starting point, we will experiment with materials, shape our ideas and create small structures inspired by our imagination.

Two hands of a Black child draw an orange dove holding a small branch in its beak on a white sheet of paper. The paper is placed on a mosaic surface.

This cross-rcultural workshop draws on the materials from the Cycladic Culture Museum Kit, giving children the opportunity to use whichever language they choose as they explore the concept of freedom, both on an individual and a collective level.

With a Cycladic figurine as our hero and heroine, we learn about its history and its place in the Museum… until it decides to step outside! Will it change its form? Who will it meet? What will they say? How will it move? How will it feel?

Come and discover the answers together through visual arts and movement-based activities and explore what the word “freedom” means to each and every one of us!

In a park, a stage has been set up where two men and a woman sit on yellow chairs and play music. The man on the left has gray hair and plays the bouzouki, the woman in the middle has light brown hair and plays the laouto, and the man on the right has light brown hair and plays the acoustic guitar. Below the stage, many children sit and stand, all facing the stage.

A Surreal Museum. A storytelling and music performance for children aged 7 to 107.

What if museums were not buildings, but stories? And what if folk tales were the museums of our oral tradition, bringing to life worlds and experiences from the past? Then perhaps, in this performance, you may find yourself visiting one such dreamlike museum.

Inspired by distant corners of the world and history, the performance brings to light characters who are at the same time familiar and strange, finding themselves entangled in the most unexpected situations. Some collect precious objects hidden away in the bustling bazaars of the East; others gather spells from Caribbean sorcerers; while others live through stories of everyday madness that awaken their ancient ancestors, along with their stories, customs and songs.

In a large space with a grey floor, several spectators sit on the ground and watch people performing various dance movements. Among the dancers is a person using a wheelchair.
