Catherine McCormack – The Venus Trap

Drawing on the Cycladic Museum’s current exhibition Jeff Koons: ‘Venus’ Lespugue, Catherine McCormack, who has contributed with an essay for the exhibition catalogue, takes a closer look at the ‘Venus’ archetype in both art history and broader western visual culture as a category that has shaped expectations about female identity.

Beginning with the enigmatic paleolithic figurines that led feminist archaeologists such as Marija Gimbutas  to argue for evidence of a matriarchal religion, McCormack will trace a potted history of ‘Venus’ as one of the default terms for representations of women across art and culture from classical Greek Aphrodite of Knidos, through Botticelli’s ubiquitous Renaissance example to modernist reworkings, including those by women artists who sought to challenge its limitations as a template for the myth of ideal womanhood.

Αυτή την περίοδο εργάζεται πάνω σε βιβλία με θέμα τις γυναίκες καλλιτέχνιδες των πρώιμων νεότερων χρόνων και την Elena Ferrante, τον φεμινισμό της διαφοράς και την πολιτική του ιταλικού γυναικείου κινήματος.

Στα πρόσφατα βιβλία της περιλαμβάνονται τα Women in the Picture: Women, Art and the Power of Looking (2021) και The Art of Looking Up (2019), μια επισκόπηση οροφογραφιών από τον Michelangelo έως τον Cy Twombly. Επιμελήθηκε την έκθεση Matrescence and Maternality στην γκαλερί Richard Saltoun (2019–20) και το πρόγραμμα Exploring Radical Female Joy με την Unit London (2022–23). Συνεργάζεται τακτικά με την εκπομπή Front Row του BBC Radio 4 και με την εφημερίδα The New European, ενώ έχει διδάξει στο UCL, στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Οξφόρδης και στο Sotheby’s Institute of Art, όπου ίδρυσε το πρόγραμμα σπουδών Women and Art.
