“Under the Sahara and Beyond!”

THE SUMMER CAMP

This year’s summer camp invites children on a vibrant journey through the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, where they will explore music, dance, storytelling, traditions, and visual arts—all serving as inspiration for their own creations.

In the framework of the Marlene Dumas: Cycladic Blues exhibition (June 5 – November 2) at the Museum of Cycladic Art, children will also engage in conversations about the human form, experimenting with a variety of techniques and materials. They will create clay sculptures, oversized masks, expressive patterns, story illustrations featuring jungle scenes, and artworks using improvisational color techniques.

Throughout the week, children will be accompanied by a wide array of activities: games—rhythmic, musical, dance, and theatrical—competitions, and storytelling.
On the final day, they will set up and present their own exhibition for parents and guardians, showcasing all they’ve created during this imaginative week.

PROGRAM

Day 1
The Human Form – Painting

The week begins with a guided tour of the temporary exhibition “Marlene Dumas: Cycladic Blues.” Children will explore the artist’s distinctive human figures, imagine their conversations with the ancient Cycladic figurines, and take part in interactive games based on the artworks. In the workshop, they’ll experiment with unusual materials to create colors and express movement and emotion through their own unique human forms.

Day 1
The Human Form – Sculpture

Children will take a cultural trip to Congo and Mali, listening to local stories, dancing to traditional rhythms, and creating their own choreographies. Inspired by the clay figures of Djenné (Mali), the wooden sculptures of the Bambara people, and the Ndop figures from the Kuba culture (Congo), they will create their own clay sculptures.

Day 3
Masks

Children will explore the rich traditions of the Dogon tribe in Mali and their spectacular Mask Festival. Through storytelling, mythical spirits and animals will come to life. Each child will choose an animal that represents them, create a large mask using recycled materials, and help organize a tribal ceremony for everyone to join.

Day 4
Weaving and Printmaking

Our journey continues to Ghana, where the children will learn about the vivid kente cloth of the Akan people—its patterns, meanings, and stories. They will create their own stamps and print unique textiles inspired by kente designs. These individual works will be assembled into a large collaborative “woven” piece, which will later serve as inspiration for an original musical composition.

Day 5
Tales

The final day is dedicated to the magical stories of East Africa. Children will discover tales from Tanzania and Kenya, brought to life through the colorful tinga-tinga painting style. Using this technique, they will illustrate their own stories.
To conclude the week, children will present their creations to family and friends—an exhibition and celebration marking the end of their unforgettable journey!

Summer Camp is addressed to Greek-speaking children in Greece and abroad.

Monday – Friday: 10:00-13:00

Parents/Guardians can drop off their children at the entrance on Vasilissis Sofias Ave and 1 Irodotou st at 09:00. They can pick them up from the same location at 15:00. Arrival and departure times must be strictly followed. Supervision is not available before or after the specified hours.

If a child needs to leave earlier than 15:00, the accompanying adult must inform the facilitators at drop-off or send an email the day before to emarkou@cycladic.gr.

The Summer Camp hosts 20 children per week with 5 facilitators.

Yes, they can participate.

This week is exclusively for children whose first or second native language is English. It is not addressed to children who are learning English as a foreign language.

Yes, it takes place inside the Museum, in the workshops and exhibition areas. The children will also spend some time, in the garden of the Stathatos Mansion. All necessary safety measures will be taken.
