Amphora
OBJECT NARRATIVES
DESCRIPTION
This vase is an amphora of the Geometric period, dated in 720 BC. Although this period is characterised by its strict geometric decoration, from the mid-8th century BC onwards there is a flourishing of free pictorial representations on the surfaces of clay vases. Gradually, the most talented vase-painters began to experiment with human and animal representations in their creations.
On the neck of the amphora a representation of a chariot with a charioteer holding the reins and whip is depicted. The presence of the chariot may refer to the aristocratic status of the owner of the vase or to his participation in horse races held in honour of the deceased.
