Medusa, in Greek mythology, is mentioned as one of the three Gorgons. Medusa was the only mortal among the three Gorgon sisters, Medusa was also called Gorgo, which means wild look. Goddess Athena placed the head of Medusa on her shield, the “gorgoneion” device used as weapon. Gorgoneion is considered as an evil-averting amulet. In Antiquity, Gorgoneion has been imprinted on many Greek and Roman objects such as shields, breastplates, mosaics and coins.
