Greek fighting among ancient ruins, 1829

Depicted in this oil painting is a Greek Kapetan with his palicars, holed up amidst the ruins of an ancient temple and battling against the Turks. The brave leader holds a pistol in one hand and the flag with a cross nailed to its pole in the other. The painter strives to show that the rebellious Greek were at once fighting for their religion and defending their ancient heritage, with bravery worthy of the ancient heroes.
Oil painting Peter- Heinrich- Lambert von Hess (1792-1871)
