Lying in the centre of the Cyclades, Paros is the largest of a wider cluster of islands that includes Antiparos, the uninhabited Despotiko and Strongylo, the islet of Saliagos and other smaller islets. It occupies 195 sq.km and its capital is Paroikia. The island was named after Paros, leader of Arcadians who settled in the area of presend-day Paroikia in the 9th c.BC.
