Mosaic with Trident
€700.00
Decorative object inspired by the “House of the Trident,” one of the most luxurious residences unearthed on the island of Delos. The house was named after the impressive mosaic floor that adorned its peristyle courtyard.
The trident, symbol of Poseidon, god of the sea, often appears flanked by dolphins and an anchor. When depicted adorned with a ribbon, it expresses wishes for favourable winds, safe voyages and protection from the perils of the sea
The mosaic represents an art form with an ancient and enduring tradition. It is created using a composition of small pieces of marble, enamel, and glass paste, carefully set to form colourful designs and patterns. This technique, which developed in the Hellenistic world and flourished particularly on Delos during the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, reveals the refined aesthetics, craftsmanship and cosmopolitan character of the Cycladic islands. The mosaics of Delos stand as vivid testimonies to the island’s artistic excellence, technical mastery and its close connections with the wider Mediterranean world.
