Cycladic artists often used colors to represent the facial features of individuals holding significant positions in their societies. Sailors, merchants, and skilled artisans are depicted with painted characteristics such as hair, eyes, and vague decorative symbols. The pigments used for coloring often protected these particular points of the marble surface from the erosion suffered by the rest of the figurine, appearing now in relief.
