Red-figure Krater

€910.00

This is a replica of a vessel used for mixing wine with water during symposia (drinking celebrations). The one side of the vessel, depicts a Maenad in vigorous motion, holding a tambourine and a branch, while trying to evade a pursuing Satyr.

Another Satyr on the right side seems to be attempting to block her path. In Greek mythology, Maenads were nymphs who accompanied the god Dionysus, and Satyrs also accompanied and served him.

The playful interactions between Maenads and Satyrs are a characteristic theme in ancient Greek vase-painting.
