Kyathos Dipper

It is a deep cup of the “Chalcidian” workshop with one handle. The central figure of the scene is a Siren flanked by two lions. The mythical bird with the female head is depicted as if walking to the right with its head turned backwards. The open wings of the Siren indicate a defensive posture and place the mythical creature in a battle scene with the lions flanking it. Kyathoi were vessels for dipping wine from larger vessels (craters), but they were also used as a measure for mixing wine with water.
