VASE FOR MIXING WINE WITH WATER | "THE RAPE OF EUROPA"

500

Description

Vessel for mixing wine with water, or red-figure calyx krater, representing "the Rape of Europa".

Zeus, smitten by the beauty of Europa, metamorphosed himself into a snow-white bull in order to seduce her. Europa enchanted by this creature, mounted its back and she suddenly found herself flying over the sea. Hermes leads the way and the winged Eros, who follows, hints at the passion that will draw the god and the mortal into their divine union.
