One of the most characteristic type of marble vessel of the Early Cycladic I period. Its use in the daily life of the Early Cycladic people remains enigmatic. The popular name kandila derives from its resemblance to ritual vessels (oil lamps) of modern Greek Orthodox churches in the Cyclades in many of which such vases were used until recently. The violin-shaped figurines are the earliest manifestation of Cycladic sculpture. The form of these figurines renders schematic views of the female body.&nbsp;They presumably served as amulets or talismans.

Marble carving in the Aegean had achieved high levels of sophistication already from the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC. Marble vessels were highly estimated by Cycladic people as symbols of wealth and social status. Their shapes fascinate the modern spectator; however, their use in antiquity remains a mystery. They may have been used in rituals, associated with the religion of prehistoric Cyclades.
