PENDANT | FLYING RAM WITH CHILD

80

Description

Gold plated pendant of a flying ram with child.

The image refers to the legend of the Argonautic expedition. Pelias, king of Iolcus, asked Jason to bring him the golden fleece that was in the land of the Colchis, hung on an oak tree in the grove of the god Ares and guarded by a sleepless dragon. The Golden Ram had carried Phrixos and Helli on his back, in order to escape from Boeotia, so that they would not be sacrificed on the altar of Zeus. When Phrixus escaped unharmed to Colchis, he sacrificed the Ram to the god and offered its skin, the fleece, to King Aetes.
