The Museum of Cycladic Art announces that, due to circumstances, the exhibition TAKIS. Sculptor of Magnetism, Light and Sound, organized by the Museum of Cycladic Art, in collaboration with Tate Modern and MACBA Museum d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, and which would have been on view in Athens from May 20th to October 25th, is cancelled.
I hope you and your families are all well, healthy and coping with strength and patience.
In these challenging times, my thoughts are with all the Cycladic Museum community: our staff, our volunteers, our Museum Friends and our generous supporters, who all contribute with commitment to offer art and culture.
It is the first time during the twelve years as President that I am obliged to announce the cancellation of an exhibition: TAKIS. Sculptor of Magnetism, Light and Sound dedicated to one of the most important Greek artists of the 20th century. The exhibition has been organized in collaboration with Tate Modern and MACBA Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art and was scheduled to open to the public in Athens on May 20th.
Under the unprecedented moments that our planet is facing, and despite the preparations and efforts of everyone involved, it is our duty and obligation to make this timely and immediate decision.
This travelling exhibition started its journey on July 2019 at Tate Modern in London and is currently in Spain, one of the countries hit the hardest. The process of its transportation to Greece was just about to begin. The exhibition would complete its journey, at the end of October 2020 with the return of the works back to their respective lenders. Meanwhile, the Museum has proceeded with already organizing its next exhibitions succeeding TAKIS. Therefore, under these unexpected circumstances we are forced to cancel it, prioritizing everyone's health and safety.
The Museum is more than its exhibitions, programs and collections. Above all, it is about its community. With the aim to safely stay in touch with all of you in the near future, we are continuously developing online content with creative home activities for all ages that will be enriched on a regular basis.
During these very difficult time, culture remains strong within us. History enables us not only to accept what we are currently experiencing, but also to envision a better world.
Art gives us hope and strength.
I am looking forward to seeing you soon.
In the meantime, stay home,
