As part of its Contemporary Art Program, the Museum of Cycladic Art is organizing two new initiatives with the title: Contemporary Art Talks and Contemporary Groundbreakers.

CONTEMPORARY ART TALKS

Every Monday from March 13 to April 3 2023, 18.30-20.30 Language: Greek Information: 210 7228321 Price for 2 remaining online meetings: 10€The Contemporary Art Talks series aims to explore the broad and complex field of contemporary art. The discussions will focus on artists who have shaped the contemporary art scene and whose work has marked the modern history of art, museums with a strong impact and cultural institutions that shape current conditions.The first cycle, with the title “What is it that makes contemporary art so different, appealing (and controversial)?”will consist of four meetings hosted by Art Historian Pantelis Tsavalos, taking place every Monday from March 13th to April 3rd, 2023. This series will focus on the relationship between contemporary art and modern and classical art and the ways in which this relationship shapes the terms and boundaries of contemporary art.Where does the sense of awkwardness we often feel in front of contemporary art come from? What criteria qualify objects and installations as works of art when traditional standards such as craftsmanship and aesthetic value are absent? Does transforming the commonplace constitute an artistic act? What happened to the great artistic tradition that fills the museums of the world and the universe of images within us? Were they abandoned or did they adapt to the new facts of the world and the new human needs? And if the above considerations are true, what is it that makes contemporary art so popular and fills museums and exhibitions all over the world?This cycle will take participants on a virtual journey to major exhibitions and exhibits of contemporary art museums around the world, accompanied by rich visual material, using a socio-historical, formalist and semantic approach.

Pantelis Tsavalos is an art historian. He has studied Greek and English language and literature at the University of Athens; painting and graphic design at the Vakalo College; history and philosophy of art at the Open University and the University of Athens. He is Professor of Art History and Dean of Vakalo College. He collaborates with public and private institutions as curator and lecturer on the field of art and culture.
