<h3>As part of its Contemporary Art Program, the Museum of Cycladic Art is organizing two new initiatives with the title: Contemporary Art Talks and Contemporary Groundbreakers.</h3>

CONTEMPORARY ART TALKS

Every Monday from May 8 to May 29 2023, 18:30-20:30 Language: GreekThe Contemporary Art Talks series aims to explore the broad and complex field of contemporary art. The discussions will focus on artists who have shaped the contemporary art scene and whose work has marked the modern history of art, museums with a strong impact and cultural institutions that shape current conditions.Contemporary art at the Venice Biennale (2007-2022)This series of lectures follows the first set of talks on Contemporary Art, presented by Pantelis Tsavalos during March and April 2023 (“What is it that makes contemporary art so different, so appealing and so controversial?”). It offers an extensive virtual tour of the most interesting and important works of contemporary art that were presented at the Venice Biennale over the past fifteen years (2007-2022). The oldest, largest and most important Art Biennale provides us with the opportunity, every two years, to witness the phenomenon of artistic creation from all around the world as it is showcased in this grand gathering for the global art community.The lectures will feature a selection of works from curators' central narratives and the rationale that shaped their curatorial proposals, as well as works from national participations and collateral exhibitions. In this way, this series will delve into the fascinating field of contemporary art, a realm of personal expression, introspection, criticism, reflection, and creativity, a territory where fundamental questions of human life and social reality are explored.

Monday, May 8th The first lecture presents a selection of works from the 2007 Biennale. This exhibition, one of the most interesting ever presented, is entitled Think with the senses – feel with the mind. The wordplay between the phrases aims to remove the separation that has been formulated and prevailed since ancient times between the two poles of human consciousness: mind versus senses, logic versus hyperlogical and thought versus emotion. In the case of works of art, this duality is reflected in the conceptual works that we perceive (and enjoy) through mind processes, versus works that aim at a kind of aesthetic experience, whose meaning exists and is perceived through their formalistic qualities and the emotions they evoke. The bet that Robert Storr won with his selection of works and artists for the 52nd Biennale was precisely the proof that important works of art successfully balance between the aforementioned poles, lending themselves to being understood in their full complexity, intellectually, emotionally and perceptually.The three following lectures are dedicated to the three most recent Biennales (2017, 2019 and 2022).Monday, May 15th The 2017 Biennale is a tribute to art and artists themselves, as the title Viva arte viva implies. As Christine Macel, curator of the exhibition, points out, today, in a world filled with conflict and turmoil, art bears witness to the most precious aspect of our humanity. Art is the ultimate ground for reflection, personal expression, freedom and fundamental questions. Art is the cherished realm of dreams and utopias, a catalyst for human connections that unites us with both nature and the world, elevating us to a spiritual dimension. Art is the last frontier, a garden to be cultivated above and beyond trends and personal interests. It stands as an indisputable alternative to individualism and indifference. It shapes us and makes us whole. In an age of global disorder, art embraces life, and the role, voice and responsibility of the artist become more critical than ever.Monday, May 22nd The 2019 Biennale, May you live in interesting times, is both a curse and a blessing, a well-established source and fake news. It explores how art can act as a guide, opening people's eyes to unexpected ways of existing in the world and changing their view of the world. In a world plagued by crises, upheavals and breaches of trust in institutions, traditions and established relationships, art attempts to reassess the terms and limits of reference. The curator's choices focus on the work of artists who challenge existing habits of thought and, with their work, broaden our readings of objects and images, gestures and situations. As stated by the exhibition curator Ralph Rugoff, the core principle of the 2019 Biennale is that the most significant aspect of an exhibition is not what it exhibits, but rather how the public can utilize their experience post-exhibition to confront everyday realities with a broadened perspective and newfound energy.Monday, May 29th The 2022 Biennale, titled The milk of dreams, was inspired by a book of the same name written by the surrealist artist Leonora Carrington (1917-2011), which describes a magical world where life is constantly redefined through the prism of imagination. The intersection of reality and hyper-reality provided Cecilia Alemani with the opportunity to set up a very interesting exhibition that encompasses a diverse range of works that represent bodies and their transformations, explore the relationship between humanity and technology and investigate the connection of bodies to both the earth and the cosmic firmament. Alemani's choices are dominated by works that express concern about current issues such as the influence of technology, rising social tensions, the outbreak of the pandemic and the looming threat of environmental destruction. They remind us that as mortal bodies, we are neither invincible nor self-sufficient, but rather part of a symbiotic web of interdependencies that bind us together, as well as with other species of life and the planet as a whole.Each presentation is structured in two parts. The first part presents the curator's rationale along with a selection of the most significant works that make up the central narrative, while the second part showcases some intriguing works from national participations, as well as collateral exhibitions. This brings us to the main objective of this lecture series, which is to explore the fascinating field of contemporary art in greater depth.The lectures are accompanied by rich visual material and follow an approach mixing socio-historical, formalist and semantic elements.

Pantelis Tsavalos is an art historian. He has studied Greek and English language and literature at the University of Athens; painting and graphic design at the Vakalo College; history and philosophy of art at the Open University and the University of Athens. He is Professor of Art History and Dean of Vakalo College. He collaborates with public and private institutions as curator and lecturer on the field of art and culture.
