Cycladic Café Art Project | Jannis Varelas

His work investigates the state of contemporary human condition. His themes are often based on socially induced phenomena, approached with playfulness, primitivism and surrealism. The signs, symbols and marks in Varelas’ work recall automatic painting or children’s drawings, with added dynamism deriving from the artist’s highly physical, gestural technique. Playfully fusing abstraction and realistic representation, he constructs reality from fragments: like in archeological excavations, lived moments are presented to us in a seemingly arbitrary composition of random traces.

As part of the Contemporary Art Program, the Museum of Cycladic Art presents the Cycladic Café Art Project connecting social spaces with art. Aiming to embrace both the greek and the international contemporary art scene, the Museum presents works by internationally acclaimed and emerging artists, which relate to current Museum exhibitions and activities. The Cycladic Café Art Project stimulates an intimate dialogue bringing art closer to everyday life.
