Cycladic at Blenheim Palace, Cecily Brown Exhibition

Live Virtual Event for our MCA Friends

Cecily Brown at Blenheim Palace is a major exhibition of over thirty new works by the celebrated British painter. Cecily Brown is the seventh contemporary artist to be invited by Blenheim Art Foundation, and this is the first exhibition in the Foundation’s programme to be comprised entirely of new work created in response to the Palace, and the first devoted to contemporary painting.

For this exhibition, Brown has developed a significant new body of work responding to Blenheim Palace’s history as an English country estate and as the home to successive generations of the Spencer-Churchill family and their world-renowned permanent collection of paintings, tapestries and decorative arts. Through this timely exhibition of paintings, drawings, monotypes, and a new textile, Brown addresses the portrayal and conservation of British ruling class heritage through images of soldierly valour and pastoral leisure.

About the Artist

Cecily Brown (British, b.1969) was born in London, England, and studied at the Slade School of Art, becoming influenced by the work of early Abstract Expressionists such as Willem de Kooning and Joan Mitchell. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at several prominent institutions, including MoMA PS1 in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the Saatchi Gallery in London, the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, the Gagosian Gallery in London, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. In 2018–19, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark, presented an overview of her career. In the same year, she exhibited two large paintings in the main hall of the Metropolitan Opera, New York - and was the first artist invited to do so since Marc Chagall in 1966. In September 2020, she opened her major exhibition at Blenheim Palace. The exhibition closed on 8 February 2021.
