The artist Mikhalis Makroulakis has created 8 magnificent paintings, inspired by the crowning of victors
with wreaths in the major athletic events of classical antiquity,
namely Olympia, Nemeia, Pythia, Isthmia, Naia and Panathinaia. Leaves of
wild olive, laurel, oak tree, wild celery, pine tree, or even apples
were used for the making of those wreaths that constitute the focal
point of the exhibition.
A special catalogue has been prepared for the
exhibition with introductory chapters by Professor N. Chr. Stampolidis,
providing useful information about the major athletic events in ancient
Greece and the various plants that were used to make wreaths for the
victors.
